Veganism and Spiritual Growth

As we grow on our spiritual journey, we become more aware of the choices we make on a daily basis- from our thoughts and intentions to the things we eat and consume. Veganism is an essential aspect of spirituality because it is rooted in fundamental spiritual principles, such as love, oneness, peace, empathy and compassion. And because we are spiritual beings, having a human experience with the purpose to consciously evolve, how we live our lives, becomes vital for our spiritual growth and our soul’s evolution.
“May all that have life be delivered from suffering.” -Buddha

Veganism is much more than a diet. It is a matter of consciousness, ethics and morality. Food and lifestyle choices are significant aspects of our spiritual practice. What we feed our bodies and how we live our lives, is a reflection of our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves and the world.

Humans have been conditioned, for thousands of years, to believe that killing certain animals for food and entertainment is our birthright and important for our health and well-being. But most of us are not aware of the effects of animal agriculture, as institutionalized animal cruelty has become the framework of our society.

However, as we awaken to our own spirituality, we begin to understand that just because we’ve been doing something since the beginning of time, does not make it right and unchangeable. The path of spiritual growth requires us to live consciously and harmoniously and to strive to minimize harming and causing suffering to anything or anyone.

“The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.” ~Charles Darwin

Love is the essence of spirituality and compassion is a divine expression of love. But how can we be truly compassionate spiritual beings and allow animal abuse, slavery and murder? How can we grow in consciousness knowing that animal agriculture is the main cause of climate change and destroying our planet? How can we cultivate self-love knowing that animal protein and carcinogens are directly linked to numerous life-threatening diseases?

“Only when we have become non-violent towards all life, will we have learned to live well ourselves.” ~Cesar Chavez

Veganism is the commitment to protecting the entire circle of life by simply not contributing to the suffering on the planet of the voiceless, whether people or animal. All life is worthy of love and compassion.
All animals are souls, like us, here walking on this earth finding their own meaning and purpose in life.

Veganism is a conscious choice to respect all beings and all sentient life- realizing that we are all one, all connected, all worthy of love. Conscious, compassionate, plant-based way of living is not only best for our fellow sentient beings and for Mother Earth, but also for our personal spiritual evolution.

Here are six spiritual aspects of veganism to consider on the spiritual journey:

1. Consciousness

“The future depends on what we do in the present.” ~Gandhi

Most of us are completely unaware of where our foods come from, unaware of the truth of animal agriculture and the immense torture and cruelty millions of animals experience every day. We have been desensitized to their pain and suffering. In addition, we are miseducated about nutrition and not aware (despite of numerous scientific facts and studies) that the consumption of animal products is harmful to our health. Not many even know that animal agriculture takes up 30 percent of the world’s land, destroying the Amazon and rain forest! Many ignore the fact that animal agriculture is unsustainable and the greatest cause of climate change, leading to the destruction of our planet.

Spirituality is the expansion of consciousness and the realization of truth, which is oneness with all. When we grow in consciousness, we can no longer afford to be ignorant. We are called to a greater cause to make choices that reflect our deepest values for the sake of all.

There’s no greater human virtue than kindness.

2. Compassion

“Animals are here with us, not for us.” ~Anonymous

We have been conditioned and indoctrinated to believe that we are separate from others, following other’s paradigms and dogmas, disconnected from the essence of our being that is rooted in oneness. Those of us who have been culturally conditioned to see the world primarily through a personal lens, may find it difficult to relate to or empathize with other beings.
If our compassion doesn’t include all life, it is not complete.

Our society is designed to feed the ego’s selfish desires and greed and not embrace our deepest compassion and connection with all of life. The ego does not want us to see the truth. Because ego in its essence is illusion, truth would be destructive to the ego. So the ego always finds reasons to avoid and to deny, to repress and to suppress, to deceive and to conceal the truth. By being aware of the ego, we can transcend it and embrace our Authentic self and live Highest Purpose. When we move beyond ego and grow in consciousness , we tune into our true nature, which is always loving and compassionate.

In order to live up to our fullest human potential, we must align ourselves with infinite flow of love and compassion that flows through all life and all beings.

3. Responsibility

Once we realize our connectedness with all things, all beings and the entire Universe, we begin to understand our responsibility to evolve beyond the limitations of the human ego and to take charge of our life experiences, instead of blindly following the masses. As mentioned before, most of us are not educated about the food industry, animal agriculture and their effect on our health and our planet. It takes courage to stand against injustice and immorality, especially when it is justified and reinforced by culture and society.
The separate ego does not want to be fully accountable and tends to hide out behind one excuse or another. But only when we set the intention to be the change we would like to see in the world, are we in a spiritually empowered position to consciously create our future.

For those of us who have spent a lifetime identifying with the personal ego and the culturally conditioned self, it will require nothing less than a heroic effort to embrace this kind of deeper responsibility.

“Vegan food is soul food in its truest form. Soul food means to feed the soul. And to me, your soul is your intent. If your intent is pure, you are pure.” ~Erykah Badu

4. Intuition:

Spiritual awakening requires us to go within to connect to our essence, our truth and our purpose. And as we grow on our journey and align ourselves with the deeper aspects of our Higher Self, we begin to follow our intuition that guides us in making the best decisions for our soul’s evolution. Intuitively we know what our minds and bodies need from us. When we learn to honor our spirit, our intuition becomes heightened, communication between body and mind is enhanced, and we feel lighter in body, mind and spirit. This heightened awareness eventually makes it impossible to pollute one’s body or the planet or one’s spiritual energy.
Once we allow ourselves to be guided by our intuition, we realize that deep within we know our oneness and connectedness with all life and our soul’s desire for love, peace and harmony- we know not to harm ourselves and others.

From a spiritual perspective , eating live-plant food awakens dormant powers of intuition, instinct and consciousness.

5. Vibrational Energy

Everything is energy and can either raise or lower our vibrational energy. Food is the source of the body’s chemistry and what we ingest affects our consciousness, emotions, and vibration. The flesh of a dead specie is dense, carries the heavy energy of cruelty and suffering, and therefore lowers our energy both physically and vibrationally. On the other hand, fruits, vegetables, and grains are reservoirs of pure, basic life energies which are very light and digestible. Plant-based foods that have been grown naturally with care, nourishes our mind, body and spirit, raising our vibration.

A high vibrational diet consists of foods that are ALIVE and that positively benefit the person, as well as the planet as a whole. In addition, living and eating compassionately extends love into the world, raising the vibrational energy of the entire world.

6. Evolution

Humanity is awakening to its connection to source and its purpose to evolve. We are beginning to understand that conscious evolution may be the sole purpose of our existence. When we live in accordance with our true nature, we are empowered to develop higher levels of consciousness that allow us to reach our fullest human and spiritual potential for the sake of our soul’s evolution and the evolution of all. Veganism is an important aspect of our spiritual awakening as it transcends personal and cultural conditioning and empowers us to consciously create a better future.
“A liberated relationship to life is one that is no longer dominated by the culturally conditioned desire to maintain the status quo.” ~Andrew Cohen

Evolution in consciousness requires us to face everything and avoid nothing. Emotionally, most of us have become disconnected from your own truth. But unless we awaken to a deeper, spiritually inspired conscience, we will continue to make the same mistakes that have led to infinite suffering and destruction. If we don’t face ourselves and our own limitations in any given moment, we will continue to remain stuck in ego and low energy, and will eventually lose touch with our souls. In order to free our souls and evolve, we must remove and transcend all barriers that block our spiritual growth.

Ultimately veganism is a spiritual movement, based on divine principles of oneness and interconnectedness with all life, through the conscious practice of compassion, sensitivity and reverence for all. Veganism allows us to honor our souls and live in peace and harmony with all of life. When we aspire to evolve, to live a truly spiritual life, to become an enlightened person, we dare to open our hearts to love and embrace our highest evolutionary potential.
